Joint workshop ISO WG8 - AIDE SP4 in Milano AIDE and ISO meeting in Milano

On 17 May a joint workshop involving ISO WG8 and AIDE SP4 will take place in Milano. Results of the AIDE project will be presented to ISO experts to discuss their relevance or usability for future standardization acitivities.

Results on Work Package 3.2 work within AIDE Results on Work Package 3.2 work within AIDE

AIDE WP3.2 entitled “Specifications and system Architecture” aims to specify the technical functional requirements and the functional reference architecture of the AIDE system. This includes the basic functional specifications for the adaptive interface functions to be developed in WP3.4 and the driver-vehicle-environment monitoring modules developed in WP3.3.

ITS World Congress, 8 - 12 October 2006, London, UK

The AIDE truck demonstrator (shared with other EU funded projects such as PReVENT and GST) was exhibited at the European Commission’s stand at the ITS World Congress in London. In the truck demonstrations were given of several AIDE features, such as in-vehicle application output coordination, driver monitoring and nomadic device integration.

Car makers participating to the project together with relevant suppliers and research centres developed the “Interaction and Communication Assistant” (ICA), the manager of all information exchange between the vehicle and the driver. In addition, a variety of virtual prototypes of the AIDE HMI have been developed and evaluated by project partners.

SEAT presented a León unit as the AIDE city car prototype at ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) World Congress, held at London from October 8 to 12. AIDE participated to the FP6 ICT for Transport Concertation Meeting “Towards a common European communication architecture for Co-Operative Systems” organized by European Commission, at Leuven, Belgium at 5-6 July 2006. To the concertation meeting the main features of different on going IST projects related to cooperative systems have been analyzed in order to provide a common view and to identify synergies. Dr. Johan Engstrom, (VTEC) the AIDE’s technical coordinator and Dr. Luisa Andreone (CRF) presented the AIDE’s architecture solution to a special HMI session.

HUMANIST and AIDE is organising a one day workshop on naturalistic driving studies on 13 Sep 2006 at BMW premises in Munich.
The workshop is open to all participants in the projects HUMANIST and AIDE who have an interest in these issues and who are willing to spend a day debating them. Transport Research Arena – TRA Europe 2006 "Cleaner safer and smarter road transport for Europe"

AIDE was present in the TRA Europe 2006 conference, Gothenburg, Sweden the 12th to 15th of June, through an exhibition and a paper presentation. TRA 2006 addressed issues around the implementation of the European Research Area in transport of a sustainable, safer and more efficient road transport system in Europe.

The conference was complemented by a major exhibition showcasing how recent and future road research and technological development in Europe is supporting the conference theme. The AIDE truck Virtual Prototype was presented at this exhibition.

The event was organised jointly by the European Commission, the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council and the Conference of European Directors of Roads. The objective was the promotion of the strategic alignment of road transport research, bringing together all European road research stakeholders around a shared Strategic Research Agenda.

AIDE and ISO spring meeting in Munich AIDE and ISO spring meeting in Munich

From May 8th to 12th the Spring 2006 meetings of ISO/TC22/SC13 and WGs and SC17 will take place at Munich in the BMW Research and Innovation Center. Several AIDE partners will contribute to the discussions in the different task forces by experimental results and expertise on evaluation methodology.
AIDE at the European Transport Research Congress AIDE at the European Transport Research Congress
(Europees Transportonderzoek), Nieuwegein, Netherlands on May 17

The Congress is a Dutch event on the closure of the 6th European framework program for research and development and the opening of the 7th framework program. Its outcome is a common action plan of the Dutch government, businesses and institutes. During the congress a short review of the results of the 6th framework will be given and the way that The Netherlands can play a major role in the theme transport within the 7th framework will be discussed. TNO has reserved a stand where -among others- the AIDE poster will be visible and the AIDE flyers will be distributed.

Platform for the AIDE functionalities AIDE demonstrator vehicles

Three demonstrator vehicles have been chosen as platform for the AIDE functionalities:
  • a Volvo FH12 as truck demonstrator,
  • a Fiat Chroma as a luxury car and
  • a Seat Leon as a city car demonstrator.
All vehicles will be able to show integrated and adaptive HMIs based on different ADAS and IVIS systems. During the final phase of the project these demonstrators will be used to generally evaluate the AIDE concept.

AIDE was present in the 1st PReVENT Fusion Forum Workshop, Brussels, the 8th of March, through a poster and a lot of discussions!
Fusion Forum is an initiative of ProFusion2 of PReVENT IP which aims at the promotion of the deployment of multiple on-board sensors. ProFusion2 develops a sensor data fusion framework for safety applications. Although it focuses on the perception system of safety applications, it includes the application/decision and the action layer as part of the framework. Synergies between AIDE and ProFusion2 will be achieved though the complete system design in PReVENT applications (e.g. INSAFES)

Virtual prototypes for AIDE HMI underway Virtual prototypes for AIDE HMI underway

Based on the defined HMI concepts for each demonstrator virtual prototypes have now been produced. Expert and user evaluation sessions are being carried out to ensure usability and acceptance of all different HMI solutions.
Prototypes are now available for the
  • Graphical HMI concepts (Fiat, SEAT and VOLVO)
  • Speech dialogue system (Nuance)
  • Haptic Barrel Key (Telenostra)
  • Haptic Seat (University of Stuttgart)

AIDE project to IV 2006 AIDE project to IV 2006, 13-15 June 2006

AIDE project will participate to the IEEE Intelligent Vehicle Symposium that will take place at Tokyo, Japan, June 13-15, 2006. The paper "System architecture for integrated adaptive HMI solutions" by Angelos Amditis, Holger Kußmann, Aris Polychronopoulos, Johan Engström and Luisa Andreoneis is already submitted for review.
The paper is on the AIDE's architecture and focuses to the adaptivity of the project's solution.

More than 30 AIDE SP3 partners and a representative from AIDE SP1 met at Volvo Technology premises in order to discuss management and implementation issues that have been scouted and to establish the work plan for the following period.
Interaction topics between SP3 and the other SPs were discussed, promoting in this way the interaction between the different Sub-Projects. Encouraging results of the first empirical studies done in SP1, regarding the behaviour and safety effects of an adaptive system were reported; these results will be used as input in SP3, and especially in the development work of the Interaction and Communication Assistant module the core of the AIDE system.

On 22nd of February all task leaders of Task 2.1.4 "Development of AIDE evaluation methodology" met at BMW Research and Technology in Munich to discuss the general experimental procedure.
Task 2.1.4 is currently working on an experimental plan that allows specifying the measures for the final AIDE test regime. Input from other SP2 tasks was given by a presentation on an empirical comparison of different off-line workload measurement methods done in task 2.2.7.
All partners involved in 2.1.4 presented their experimental plans including experiments in the driving simulator. Relevant input from other tasks or projects, like HASTE or Invent was considered. All experiments will now be carried out in the labs of the AIDE partners between April and August.
Nomadic Device Integration Workshop postponed! Nomadic Device Integration Workshop postponed!

It is unfortunately necessary to postpone the Nomadic Devices Forum plenary meeting and workshops planned for 22 - 23 March 2006 in Brussels. These dates overlap with an important automotive annual congress, and many Forum members would not be able to attend. The organising committee will choose a new date for the Forum meetings. The new agenda and the meeting registration information will be announced shortly.

The i2010 Intelligent Car Initiative (ICT) builds on three pillars:
  • the work done in the framework of the eSafety initiative
  • the results of 'ICT for road safety' research projects, co-financed by the European Union over more than the past decade, and
  • activities raising the awareness of road users on of Intelligent Safety Systems with the aim to speed up the take-up and deployment of such systems.
The launching event in the Autoworld Museum will be the first concrete action under the pillar of awareness-raising activities.

The eSafety Support project, funded by the European Commission, kicked off in January 2006. The project will assist the eSafety initiative, which aims at halving the number of road fatalities in the EU by 2010.
The eSafety initiative brings together the European Commission, industry, public authorities and other stakeholders with an interest in increasing road safety and reducing the number of accidents and fatalities on Europe's roads.

AIDE HMI Virtual Prototypes workshop was organised on December 13th in Stuttgart, Germany. University of Stuttgart welcomed key partners from all sub-projects (SPs) that presented the meeting in order to collaborate successfully during the development and experimentation phase of the project. Interaction among the three Research and Technological Development (RTD) SPs was promoted and the results from all the relative working packages (WPs) were communicated.
